Throughout his professional acting career that spanned over sixty decades, James Cagney was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor three times. In 1939, he received his first Academy Award nomination for Angels With Dirty Faces but would not win his first Oscar until 1943 when he portrayed George M. Cohan in the musical biopic Yankee Doodle Dandy. In 1956, thirteen years after his first win, he would receive his last Academy Award nomination for Love Me or Leave Me before retiring from acting for twenty years in 1961.
